Trip Insurance

Please Note: We are not insurance professionals neither are we an insurance agency. Policies change all the time and/or we may have misunderstood policy text. Therefore we recommend to never rely on any representation made from our side regarding any policy recommended below but rather thoroughly read through the policies themselves.

Emergency medical insurance is mandatory for participation in all OnTop Mountaineering (OnTop ltd) Trips.

Trip insurance covers unforeseen expenses such as cancellation, medical, evacuation, and/or theft.

Once we confirm your booking, we enter into financial obligations on our side and we cannot refund payments or release you from your contractual obligations except for conditions listed on our  Cancellation Policy. Therefore, we highly recommend buying CFAR or trip cancellation insurance to cover your losses in the case that you can’t participate or have to interrupt your trip for any reason.

If you read through the fine print, common policies sold by travel agents or policies included in your credit card contract tend to exclude adventure travel, including trekking above 2000m, mountaineering, roped travel, ski & snowboard, ski mountaineering etc. You may get the best coverage if you book travel insurance policies within 14 days of paying your trip deposit.

We will gladly refer you to a travel insurance provider who offers adventure travel insurance packages and with whom our clients have had positive claims experiences in the past. Generally, you will receive the best benefits if you buy your insurance within 14 days of our booking confirmation (except for CFAR insurance which should be researched prior to booking to ensure the policy applies, see below for more information).

For adventure travel policy recommendations see our website: OnTop travel insurance recommendations.

Please direct any and all questions about coverage to your insurance provider, whether it relates to medical, trip, or travel insurance. If you do not have suitable insurance coverage for you or your child, you assume that risk. You also agree to take full responsibility, where applicable, for any related losses, expenses, or fees, regardless of whether they are covered by insurance.

Types of Insurance To Consider before your Trip

  1. Emergency Medical Services
    • No one ever plans to need medical care while away; but if you do experience misadventures on your trip, Emergency Medical Insurance covers hospital and doctors’ fees, prescriptions, emergency transportation, remote evacuation and more.
    • MANDATORY
  2. Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance
    • Life is full of surprises and so is travel! You can’t predict a natural disaster, job loss or the death of a family member or friend. When an unexpected event prevents you from traveling, Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption reimburses travel costs if your trip is canceled before you leave, or disrupted after it has begun
  3. Extreme Sports/ Adventure Travel Insurance
    • Extreme sports are not usually covered in standard trip insurance policies so the addition of an extreme sports or adventure travel add-on policy could be right for you.  Please make sure your insurance policy includes your extreme sport if you are participating in any of the following activites: outdoor rockclimbing, via ferrata, ice climbing, backcountry skiing/snowboarding, mountaineering, mountain biking, canyoneering.
  4. Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Insurance
    • This insurance type is not very popular due to it’s high cost but it does bring some of our clients peace of mind while traveling internationally. CFAR insurance is usually available as an add-on to Trip Cancellation insurance policies. Cancel for Any Reason optional coverage is ideal for travellers who need flexibility.
      • With TuGo Travel, CFAR add-on must be purchased within 5 days of booking the trip and making the initial payment (or before any cancellation penalties from the travel supplier apply), you can:
        1. Cancel for any reason (not already listed as a covered risk in the policy)
        2. Be reimbursed up to 50% of the pre-paid, unused non-refundable travel costs—as long as you cancel 5+ days before the departure date
  5. Credit Card Travel Insurance
    • Many credit cards (especially travel cards and platnium/black cards) include policies that see you insured for certain travel related expenses (i.e. car rentals, flight/trip delays, lost baggage, etc) and you could also be insured in certain situations (i.e. medical emergencies, emergency travel). Each credit card will have a unique policy so it is important that you consult with your credit card company, ideally before paying for your trip, to be sure that you have the coverage you need. Please be mindful that you will need to pay for your trip with your credit card to receive the covereage. From our research, covid-19 coverage is not included with credit card insurance policies.
